John Legend, Kelly Clarkson redo ‘Baby it’s cold outside’

John Legend will be singing tunes for Christmas enthusiasts, along with Kelly Clarkson, this year, with a new rendition of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” for his upcoming Christmas album – “A Legendary Christmas: The Deluxe Edition” set for release on November 8.

The Frank Loesser 1944 original, faced backlash last year in the light of the #MeToo social movement. The track was boycotted by radio stations as listeners pointed out lyrics that insinuate sexual coercion. The original lyrics painted a picture where the suitor appears to spike his date’s drink.

Legend, Oscar winning artist, rewrote the lyrics with comedian Natasha Rothwell of the HBO series “Insecure”. The verses include the lyrics – “What will my friends think…” sings Clarkson. “I think they should rejoice,” Legend responds. “… if I have one more drink?” “It’s your body, and your choice.”

Instead of hinting at date rape, which is what some critics contend the song is alluding too, when Clarkson sings “I’ve gotta go away,” Legend responds with “I can call you a ride,” rather than just singing “baby, it’s cold outside.”

The song celebrates Christmas with respectful love and mirth, and we couldn’t be happier. Hats off to you, Johnny Boy!
