‘Joker 2’ Director Todd Phillips Explains Rise of Movie Franchises

Todd Phillips, the visionary director behind ‘Joker’ and its much-anticipated sequel ‘Joker 2’, has recently shared his insights on why so many standalone films are now being expanded into franchises. In a candid discussion about the state of the film industry in 2024, Phillips provided a nuanced perspective on the trend that sees even the most unique films being developed into multi-installment series.

Phillips explained that the transformation of films into franchises is largely motivated by the evolving

demands of global audiences and the financial pressures on studios. According to the director, there is a growing expectation from viewers for extended narratives and deeper character development, which franchises are better equipped to deliver.

The director also touched on the economic realities of modern filmmaking. Phillips noted that the high costs associated with producing blockbuster films mean that studios are more inclined to invest in properties with proven success.

By turning a successful film into a franchise, studios can mitigate financial risks and ensure a steady stream of revenue. Phillips emphasised that while this approach is often driven by economic considerations, it also provides filmmakers with the opportunity to explore characters and stories in greater depth over multiple films.

Phillips’s own experience with ‘Joker’ illustrates this trend. The original film, which was initially conceived as a standalone project, became a cultural phenomenon and grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. Its success naturally led to discussions about a sequel, and now ‘Joker 2’ is one of the most anticipated films of the decade.

In his remarks, Phillips also discussed the creative challenges that come with developing a film into a franchise. He stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity of the original vision while expanding the narrative. For ‘Joker 2’, Phillips and his team have worked meticulously to ensure that the sequel builds on the themes and character arcs established in the first film, while also introducing new elements that justify its existence as a continuation.
