The trailer delves into Joker’s dual nature, showcasing his struggle between Arthur Fleck, a tormented man branded a loser, and his chaotic alter ego, the Joker. “Who am I speaking to now? Which one of you is here?” asks another reporter, to which Joker asserts, “So you don’t think this is me?” Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn fuels Joker's chaos, with her character telling him, “You can do anything you want,” while they are in prison.
‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ serves as a musical sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Joker, which earned Phoenix an Academy Award for Best Actor. Director Todd Phillips explained that Fleck’s musicality inspired the idea of a musical sequel.
Lady Gaga, who plays Harley, revealed that music plays a crucial role in the film, offering characters a new medium of expression when words fall short.
“Music gives the characters a way to express what they need to say because just dialogue isn’t enough,” Gaga shared. Both she and Phoenix performed their songs without professional finesse, ensuring the performances were authentic to their characters. “It was really the only way,” Phoenix added, highlighting the rawness of their portrayal.
