Just getting started: Becky on winning

After receiving the Extraordinary Evolution Award at the Latin American Music Awards, Becky G opened up about her story on growing up in the spotlight and how it feels to have won the award. After receiving the award she explains feeling “surreal” as although she only 22 years old, she feels like she has been doing this for a long time.

“To be acknowledged and to be receiving an award like that is truly an honor,” she says. “But I feel like I’ve gone through so many different phases to get to this point, and I’m still just getting started, which is the best part.”
Becky G adds that while it was exciting being honoured for her past work during the award ceremony, she also counts her experience to be blessed and sees this as the beginning of a “new era” as she released her new album ‘Mala Santa’ the very same day. She explains that she had been signed at the age of 14 to produce music, and her current album feels like it has been eight years in the making – “I’ve learned so many things along the way that have prepared me and inspired me for this very moment,” she shares.

She explains the reason for her album being called ‘Mala Santa’ as when she was recording the song of the same name, she felt like she was the industry’s ‘Mala Santa’. Becky G calls herself so, as she considers her music career as a journey where she has undergone many ups and downs, recalls her interactions with the people in her life – do gooders, haters and all, and even admits to taking up the role of a bad saint to the enemies in her life.
