Justin Bieber is in album release mode. And, with a new era in music, comes a string of live performances leading up to the ultimate release. But, when Bieber took the stage at Saturday Night Live (SNL) this past weekend, fans were in for surprising vulnerability from the Canadian singer-songwriter.

Bieber, who featured as the musical guest on the show, delivered heartfelt performances of his latest singles – ‘Holy’ and ‘Lonely’. Taking the former to the stage against the moody backdrop of a church, Bieber showed off his melodic vocals. Decked out in a simple ensemble, it was clear that this set meant to draw attention to his musicality. Further, the ‘Baby’ singer was joined by featuring artist, Chance the Rapper, for his original guest verse on the track.

Further, in traditional SNL fashion, he took the stage for a second time. And, this time, he delivered a one-take performance of his latest single, a collaboration with producer, Benny Blanco. The track, ‘Lonely’, details loneliness and the arising anxiety Bieber felt at the peak of his career – a result of superstardom at the age of 15. In addition, Benny Blanco featured in the performance, supporting Justin’s raw, stripped down vocals with a sparkly piano arrangement.
