Kat Graham still finds it “surreal” to be portraying Diana Ross in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic. Speaking at the 2024 TIME100 Next event in New York City the 35-year-old ‘Heatwave’ actress shared her excitement about stepping into the role of the iconic Supremes singer.
Joking about her transformation, Graham said, “Hair’s a little bigger,” but reflected more seriously on the casting experience, calling it “very, very surreal.” The casting was a full-circle moment for her, especially as her close friend Kendrick Sampson was also cast as Quincy Jones in ‘Michael’. Graham, who has known Jones for nearly 20 years, found it surreal to see Sampson portraying someone who is like a father figure to her.

Despite her excitement, Graham admitted that she never imagined herself playing Diana Ross. “Who imagines themselves as Diana Ross?” she said. “Maybe in the shower or in your car. I didn’t think I’d get it. I just try to have a good time and come from a good place.”
Graham is eager for fans to see the film, which she promises will feature “a lot of good music.” She hopes to honor Diana Ross and other Black women through her portrayal, recognizing Ross’s revolutionary impact on music and the Civil Rights movement.

She also opened up about dealing with “imposter syndrome” but feels honored to be part of the project. Reflecting on the 15th anniversary of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, Graham expressed her gratitude for the lasting legacy of the show and the ongoing support from fans.
‘Michael’, starring Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson, hits theatres on 18th April, 2025.
