Kate Bush Announces Intent to Create New Music

Kate Bush has shared that she has “lots of ideas” she wants to explore now that she is ready to create new material. Known for her reclusive nature, the Hounds of Love musician recently gave a rare interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today program in anticipation of the release of Little Shrew, a new short film she wrote and directed. Set to her 2011 track ‘Snowflake’ from her last full-length album, ‘50 Words for Snow’, the black-and-white animation aims to raise funds for the charity War Child. It is available for free on Bush’s website, encouraging viewers to support organizations helping children affected by conflict.

Bush mentioned that she began working on the animation with illustrator Jim Kay a couple of years ago, shortly after the outbreak of the Ukrainian war, which she described as a shocking experience for everyone. She expressed that after a long period of peace, she felt compelled to create an animation focusing on children affected by war. She aimed to highlight the horrific nature of these experiences for young ones.

She stated that while war is “horrific for everyone,” it is “unimaginable” for children. Bush reflected on the difficult times everyone has faced recently, describing them as “dark times” and noting how exhaustion has settled in after the pandemic. She expressed disappointment that instead of returning to normal life after the pandemic, it feels like the world is spiralling from one crisis to another.

During the interview, Bush also discussed her plans to make new music, though she clarified that she is not currently working on it. She explained that she has been busy with archival work over the past few years, including redesigning her website and compiling a lyric book.

Bush expressed eagerness to begin working on a new album once she completes her current projects, saying she has many ideas and is excited to return to the creative process after a long hiatus. When asked if this was something she had been wanting to do for some time, she affirmed that she felt ready to embark on new ventures, especially over the last year.

In reference to a recent interview with David Gilmour, in which he mentioned trying to convince her to perform live again, she humorously remarked that she is “not there yet.” Bush last performed live in 2014 when she returned to the stage after a 35-year break for her ‘Before the Dawn’ residency in London, which spanned 22 nights.
