Kate Hudson Shares ‘Mixed Feelings’ on Being Called a ‘Rom-Com Queen’

Although Kate Hudson is grateful for her roles in romantic comedies, she believes her acting career has much more to offer.

In an interview with Kylie Kelce on the ‘Not Gonna Lie’ podcast, Hudson was asked if she liked being called “the rom-com queen.”  She said that she felt conflicted about the designation.  Although she has come to accept it, she also admitted that the business and viewers have expectations as a result of her romantic comedies’ success.  She wants to be able to play a variety of characters as an actor instead of being limited to a single genre.

Hudson’s Oscar-nominated performance in the 2000 movie ‘Almost Famous’ was the first thing that made her well-known.  She became a mainstay of romantic comedies in the 2000s, appearing in popular movies such as ‘Bride Wars’, ‘Fool’s Gold’, ‘You, Me and Dupree’, and ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’.

Based on their early triumphs, Hollywood has a tendency to typecast actors, especially women, she said.  Despite her love of romantic comedies, she has always wished to pursue other artistic endeavours and not be restricted to a single kind of part.

Hudson has tried to broaden her career despite her success in romantic comedies.  After putting music on hold for years to concentrate on acting, she finally released her debut album, ‘Glorious’, in 2024, fulfilling a lifelong desire.  She has also been excited about her most recent endeavour, ‘Running Point’, a sports series that lets her show off a new aspect of her abilities.  One of the main reasons she decided to take on the project was that, in contrast to many of her previous roles, this series did not centre on her characters’ romantic connections.

Hudson is excited to work on films that emphasise intricate family connections and high-stakes narratives, even if she still enjoys romantic comedies.  OTT is currently offering ‘Running Point’ for streaming.
