Kate Winslet Reveals Titanic’s Iconic ‘Door Scene’ Water Was Only Waist-Deep
Kate Winslet recently shared an intriguing detail about the famous door scene from ‘Titanic’.
During a Q&A at an advanced screening of her upcoming film ‘Lee’ in New York City on 23rd September, the conversation once again turned to the much-debated scene, where fans have long wondered if Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack could have fit on the floating door with Winslet’s Rose after the ship sank.
Winslet, 48, revealed that the water in that scene wasn’t as deep as it appeared, and it was actually easy for her to get in and out of the tank for bathroom breaks. Joking about DiCaprio, 49, likely having “PTSD” from constantly being asked about the scene, Winslet said, “The water was only waist-high.” She explained that she could easily hop off the door, walk over to the edge of the tank, and climb back on. “Leo, I’m afraid to say, was kneeling down,” she added, humorously predicting a call from director James Cameron for spilling behind-the-scenes secrets.

Winslet also mentioned the sound effects in the scene, describing how the water in the infinity tank created a constant rushing noise, which played a key role in the film’s intense final 22 minutes.
Reflecting on her first time seeing ‘Titanic’, Winslet recounted sneaking into a New York City theatre with friends, as she missed the official London premiere due to being hospitalized with food poisoning. She noted it felt surreal to be in a packed theatre watching the film in that way.

In an earlier interview with PORTER, Winslet opened up about the challenges of dealing with fame after ‘Titanic’s’ release, admitting she felt pressured to look a certain way and struggled with media intrusion. Despite those challenges, she emphasized that ‘Titanic’ is not a burden and continues to bring joy to people around the world, though she does joke about hiding whenever she’s on a boat.
Winslet’s new film ‘Lee’ hits theatres on 27th September.
