During the segment, Fallon asked Urban how he selects the cover songs he performs. Urban replied,
“I don’t know, just a well-written song. I mean, Taylor’s songs are all well-written; the bones are good … you can do any well-written song in almost any style.” He playfully suggested that Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ could even be performed on a banjo. The audience cheered at the thought.
In a twist, Fallon produced a banjo from behind his desk, prompting Urban to exclaim, “Are you serious? You just happen to have one!?” After a moment of tuning and experimentation, Urban launched into a country-infused version of ‘Espresso’, captivating the audience who clapped along to the catchy tune.
Urban’s performance showcased his versatility and knack for blending genres, effortlessly transforming Carpenter’s pop hit into a country classic. This cover adds to Urban’s reputation for delivering unique renditions of popular songs, which resonate well with his fans.
In addition to his performance, Urban recently expressed his admiration for Taylor Swift during an interview with a U.K. newspaper. He praised her ability to navigate the challenges of fame, noting, “It’s been remarkable watching Taylor grow in public because it’s pretty brutal.” Urban’s comments reflect his respect for fellow artists in the industry.
