Kelly Ripa Thought Being Named a Disney Legend Was an April Fool’s Prank

Despite her status as a daytime television icon, Kelly Ripa was genuinely surprised when she found out she had been named a Disney Legend.

During a conversation with Disney CEO Bob Iger on the episode of her podcast, ‘Let’s Talk Off Camera,’ Ripa revealed her shock at receiving the prestigious title at the D23 event in Anaheim, California. The Disney Legend award is given to individuals who have made a significant impact on the company.

Ripa, 53, told Iger, 73, that she was caught off guard by the honor, even joking that she initially thought it was an April Fool’s prank. She humorously questioned why she was chosen, suggesting they needed “a real person” to balance out the greatness of others being honored.

Iger reassured Ripa that her award was well-deserved, noting her significant contributions to television through her work on ‘All My Children’ and ‘Live!’. He highlighted that her long career has greatly contributed to Disney’s success and global image.

When Ripa mentioned that she has been hosting ‘Live!’ for 25 years, Iger acknowledged the remarkable duration of her career, expressing that she has long been worthy of the recognition. He emphasized that the honor was not just about her role on television, but also about who she is and what she represents.

Ripa received her Disney Legend award from her former cohost and friend Ryan Seacrest. During her acceptance speech, she thanked Seacrest and Iger, calling the experience “surreal” and expressing deep gratitude to the Walt Disney Company for both her professional and personal life, including meeting her husband, Mark Consuelos, on the set of ‘All My Children.’

Ripa ended her speech with a nostalgic memory of her first family trip to Walt Disney World, expressing heartfelt thanks to those who recognized her with the honour.
