Lana Del Rey Discusses Her New ‘Angry’ And ‘Conversational’ Music

Del Rey in an interview with fashion magazine W, revealed that she had been practising ‘meditative automatic singing, where she doesn’t filter anything,’ and also mentioned that she sings directly into her phone’s Voice Notes app. She went on to say that it’s obviously not perfect and admitted that she stumbles because there are a lot of pauses.

Del Rey claims she’s been sending these ‘very raw-sounding files’ to Drew Erickson, a producer and composer with whom Del Rey worked closely on last year’s ‘Blue Banisters.’ ‘Arcadia,’ ‘Black Bathing Suit,’ ‘If You Lie Down with Me,’ ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Violets for Roses’ are among Erickson’s song-writing and production credits. He also performed piano, bass and synthesiser on many tracks and is credited with writing some of the album’s horn and string arrangements.

In the W piece, Del Rey explains, that he adds an orchestra beneath the words, matching each syllable with music and adding reverb to her voice. She claims that her new song contains ‘none of it at all,’ in contrast to her 2015 album ‘Honeymoon,’ which featured several references to colour.

During the conversation, Del Rey recalls poets who have influenced her. She said that when she found out that Allen Ginsberg composed Howl in just a few days and then watched Lawrence Ferlinghetti recite Loud Prayer, she told the publication that she knew she  didn’t have to go slowly to have something be beautiful and could work swiftly if she wanted.

Del Rey has released one new single, ‘Watercolor Eyes,’ after releasing ‘Blue Banisters’ last October. The song debuted in January, appearing in an episode of HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ and on the soundtrack for the show’s second season. She sang a new song called ‘Prettiest Girl in Country Music’ with country singers Nikki Lane and Sierra Ferrell during one of Lane’s gigs in Austin, Texas later that month.
