Laurence Fishburne Was Asked to Reprise Morpheus in ‘The Matrix’ Reboot – But Never Got a Response

Recently, Laurence Fishburne said he had previously indicated interest in playing Morpheus again in ‘The Matrix Resurrections’, but the possibility never came to pass.

Fishburne disclosed that he had inquired about a comeback, even though Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was eventually chosen to play a different version of the role in the 2021 movie.  He clarified that the filmmakers did not respond favorably to his invitation to appear in the follow-up.  He claimed that, despite his interest, his involvement "didn’t happen" for reasons he couldn't explain.

The Oscar-nominated actor said that his involvement in the next ‘Matrix 5’ would rely on a number of circumstances, such as the quality of the writing and the people participating in the project.

Fishburne has already said he didn't know why he wasn't asked to come back for ‘The Matrix 4’.  The fact that the next installment will not be helmed by Lana and Lily Wachowski, the franchise's original creators, has disappointed fans. ‘The Martian’ author Drew Goddard will direct the movie, while Lana Wachowski will continue to serve as executive producer.

The fifth Matrix movie's plot has not yet been revealed, and it is still unclear if Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.  Jesse Ehrman from Warner Bros. Motion Pictures has alluded to the upcoming chapter's expansion of the franchise's universe while maintaining its core values.
