'Leave The World Behind' Falls Short of Capturing it’s Essence in the Netflix Apocalyptic Thriller

Netflix's ‘Leave the World Behind’ has the potential to transcend the typical apocalyptic thriller genre. Delving into themes of racial tensions and complex human relationships, the film explores the challenge of trusting others. It goes beyond mere escapism, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the intricacies of our daily lives.

Under the direction of Sam Esmail, ‘Leave the World Behind’ unfolds the story of Amanda played by Julia Roberts, who, exhausted from her role as a mother of two and her demanding job in the client servicing department of an ad agency, decides to escape the city life. This decision leads her and her family to a tranquil beach cottage for a much-needed holiday.

Portraying the character of Clay, Ethan Hawke stars as Amanda's husband. The couple share two children, Archie played by Charlie Evans and Rose played by Farrah Mackenzie. As they settle into their beach house retreat, the world they left behind begins to crumble. Nature, from the outset, attempts to send them signals that go mostly unnoticed, except by Rose, Amanda's perceptive daughter.

Julia Roberts' film, ‘Leave the World Behind’, falls short of being convincing. While the cinematography is commendable and the film is well-crafted, there are numerous instances where the actors fail to fully engage the audience. The attempt to evoke fear feels disconnected, leaving viewers unresponsive to the intended emotional impact. Watching the movie is akin to observing a drama unfold on screen without the ability to participate or sense the actors' vitality.
