Leigh Whannell Shares Insights on 'The Invisible Man' Sequel

Leigh Whannell wrote and directed ‘The Invisible Man’, which was a commercial success after receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and viewers when it was released in 2020. The movie is still receiving positive reviews and has become even more popular on streaming services. Given its success, it's understandable why fans are excited for a follow-up, particularly because ‘Wolf Man’, Whannell's next film, is said to take place in the same universe.

Whannell recently discussed the potential for a sequel to ‘The Invisible Man’ in an interview with ComicBook at New York Comic-Con. He doesn't think there's a purpose to keep the plot going, which is unfortunate for fans. “I really felt good about where we ended with Invisible Man,” he said. It was a closed case for me. There doesn't seem to be any more narrative left to tell. He added that Universal might decide to create a sequel even though he does not hold the character's rights.

Despite having a $7 million budget, ‘The Invisible Man’ has generated $145 million worldwide and now has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is a reboot of the 1933 film of the same name and a loose version of H.G. Wells' ‘1897’ novel. Elisabeth Moss and Oliver Jackson-Cohen play the lead roles, while Michael Dorman, Storm Reid, Aldis Hodge, and Harriet Dyer play supporting parts. Jason Blum and Kylie du Fresne produced the movie under the Blumhouse Productions banner.

Originally slated for a pre-Halloween release, Whannell co-wrote and directed ‘Wolf Man’, a reimagining of the 1941 classic that will open in theatres on 17th January, 2025. Sam Jaeger, Julia Garner, and Christopher Abbott played the key roles when filming started earlier this year.

Due to scheduling conflicts, Ryan Gosling, who was initially supposed to play the lead role, withdrew; he will now serve as executive producer instead. Blum is back as a producer through Blumhouse Productions, while other executive producers include Mel Turner, Bea Sequeira, and Ken Kao.

While ‘Wolf Man’ will be released in theatres next year, ‘The Invisible Man’ is presently available for streaming on Freevee.
