Margaret Qualley Reveals Her Skin Took 1 Year to Recover After Intense Prosthetics

Because of the excessive usage of prosthetics during the filming of ‘The Substance’, Margaret Qualley suffered considerable skin damage. The 30-year-old actress talked candidly about the negative effects the makeup had on her complexion during an interview on Josh Horowitz’s ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast.

Qualley disclosed that several of her facial shots were removed from the film because her skin was so bad while it was being filmed. She clarified that her face was so impacted by the prosthetics that it was no longer suitable for close-ups by the time they shot several scenes, such as one with a camera perspective from below. Even after production was finished, the acne brought on by the prosthetics persisted and persisted into her subsequent movie, Kinds of Kindness.

The actress revealed that because her character had comparable skin conditions, her fake acne really helped her in the job. She joked that it took her over a year to fully recover from the physical effects of the makeup and that the fake acne became a great fit for the roles she was portraying.

For her role as Sue in ‘The Substance’, Qualley sported false breasts in addition to the face prosthetics. In order to give her a Jessica Rabbit-like physique, prosthetics were used because director Coralie Fargeat had envisioned her character as a bombshell from the 1980s. “The prosthetics crew worked to produce a rack of a lifetime,” but not one that belonged to her personally,” Qualley joked about the procedure.

Demi Moore, Qualley’s co-star, had a similarly dramatic experience after undergoing a rigorous prosthetic change to become Elisabeth Sparkle. The two celebrities talked about how difficult it is to wear prosthetics; Qualley said it was mentally and physically exhausting to combine their faces into one character.
