Mariah Carey Tells All in Conversation with Oprah
Pop superstar, Mariah Carey, has never shied away from expressing herself and speaking her truth. And, now, honesty takes center stage in Carey’s life as she gears up for the release of her new book. Further, in a conversation with Oprah Winfrey, she revealed her thoughts about being biracial, her relationships, and more.
What it Meant to Be Biracial
Carey comes from Irish and African-American descent, making her biracial. And, as it turns out, that had a huge impact on her life growing up. In a clip from the conversation, Mariah revealed that her hair marked much of her identity. She said, “On both sides of the spectrum I feel like I was hated on by certain people in my family for having the lighter hair. But, then if they only realized, like no, actually, I have like matted hair, which is frizzy and curly.”
Further, she talked about how her parents and many members of her family didn’t really know how to take care of her hair. And, that left a lasting impression on her.
A Look into Her Love Life
Carey then went on to talk about her relationships in life – her marriages, dating, and more. Of her relationship with sports star, Derek Jeter, she talked about the similarities and differences between his family and hers, and the stability that gave her. She said, “It was the racial situation – his mom is Irish, his dad is black. He was a catalyst and I think that it was beautiful and his family was a healthy family and they changed my viewpoint.”
In addition, she added, “And, he was also living his dream job and doing his dream job and stuff. I believe we connected in that way.”
In conclusion, Mariah Carey also took a moment to shine the light on her relationship with her children and her fans. She spoke of them as sources of “unconditional love”. She said, “I had this connection in a way that people feel like that they know you, my fans really feel like they’re the only ones who have ever know me.”
