Martin Scorsese Creating Documentary on Pope Francis Featuring Final On-Camera Interview

The pontiff’s last on-camera interview will be featured in a new documentary about the late Pope Francis that Martin Scorsese is creating.

 Following Benedict XVI’s resignation in 2013, Pope Francis assumed the papacy and died on 21st April at the age of 88.  Cardinal Kevin Farrell said in a Vatican statement that he passed away at 7:35 a.m. that day.

 From all around the entertainment industry, tributes came in.  Scorsese talked about his sorrow, stating that he would miss Pope Francis’ warmth and presence and felt privileged to have known him.  He considered how the loss would affect the entire world, yet he felt that the Pope left a legacy of light that would never go out.

The international educational movement Scholas Occurrentes, which Pope Francis personally started, is working on the documentary, ‘Aldeas – A New Story’, as a feature-length film and a global cultural effort.  It will focus on the Pope’s last recorded interview, which was made especially for this purpose.

 Pope Francis characterised ‘Aldeas’ as a poetic and productive examination of the origins of human life, community, conflict, and the journey of existence before his death.  By highlighting the pressing need for intercultural communication, Scorsese reflected the spirit of the movie.  He thinks that one of the best methods to promote awareness and respect for diverse viewpoints is to share personal tales.

He went on to say that Pope Francis places a great deal of importance on people all around the world maintaining their cultural identities while respectfully exchanging ideas, something Scorsese believes film is ideally suited to do.

 Alongside filmmakers Spike Lee, Willem Dafoe, and Wes Anderson, Scorsese also joined a campaign earlier this year to oppose the closure of several historic cinemas in Rome.  Additionally, he shocked fans by announcing that he and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson were working on a new project.
