Mel Gibson’s ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel: Everything We Know So Far

Finally, work is underway on the eagerly awaited sequel to ‘The Passion of the Christ’.

After 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, Mel Gibson’s 2004 blockbuster, which depicted the last 12 hours of Jesus Christ’s life, is still the second highest-grossing R-rated movie in North America. ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’, the sequel, is currently in the planning stages, with production anticipated to start in 2026.

The movie will centre on Christ’s resurrection, and Jim Caviezel will play Jesus again. Gibson has, however, made it clear that the narrative will cover much more ground than just the one-off occurrence of Jesus’ resurrection. Gibson clarified in a 2016 interview with Stephen Colbert that the movie will examine the significance and larger background of the resurrection.

Gibson stated in 2022 that the project was addressing a broad and non-linear story. He described it as a comprehensive investigation of the main event and told Raymond Arroyo, presenter of ‘The World Over’, that the plot will weave together the past, present, and even other realms. He compared some aspects of the idea to science fiction.

It’s also possible that the sequel will be divided into several movies. Caviezel predicted in July 2023 that the project would be the largest movie ever made and that it would have two or perhaps three parts.

In a 2022 interview, Gibson said that he had been working on two separate versions of the script. While the other script has a more surreal approach, exploring representations of hell, the fall of angels, and other remarkable regions, the first script is extremely structured.

Caviezel has been excited about the sequel, hinting in 2018 that there will be unexpected and startling parts of the plot. He is convinced that the sequel will have a greater impact and scope than the first.

According to IMDb, a number of important actors from the original movie, such as Maia Morgenstern (Mary) and Francesco De Vito (Peter), will be returning.

During a January 2025 visit on ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast, Gibson, who has been investigating filming locations in Malta, Israel, Morocco, and Italy, provided production updates. Gibson expressed optimism that the project is moving forward at the appropriate speed, despite the lack of a clear start date.

‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is expected to be a bold and innovative continuation of the original tale, with production scheduled to start in 2026.
