Metallica: ‘The Black Album’ Hits 750 Weeks on Billboard 200

Metallica's 'The Black Album'

‘The Black Album’ by Metallica has achieved a milestone by spending 750 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts. Originally released in 1991, the album has intermittently charted for over 14 years since its debut.

Billboard announced this achievement on 15th July on social media. ‘The Black Album’ now joins a prestigious list as only the fourth album in history to achieve this feat. The other albums that have surpassed it include Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side of The Moon’ with 990 weeks, Bob Marley’s ‘Legend’ with 843 weeks, and Journey’s ‘Journey’s Greatest Hits’ with 813 weeks.

The album was propelled by five singles: ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘The Unforgiven’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’, ‘Wherever I May Roam’, and ‘Sad But True’.

In 2021, the record marked its 30th anniversary with ‘The Metallica Blacklist’, a sprawling 53-track compilation album. It featured an expansive line-up of artists including Alessia Cara, Royal Blood, Ghost, Rina Sawayama, Miley Cyrus, Sam Fender, St. Vincent, Corey Taylor, Phoebe Bridgers, IDLES, Kamasi Washington, and more, each offering their own unique interpretations of the tracks, often with distinctive spins on the same song.

During that year, John moved Metallica frontman James Hetfield to tears with his praise of the band’s song ‘Nothing Else Matters’, calling it “one of the best songs ever written”.

This emotional moment followed John’s appearance on Miley Cyrus‘ cover of the single for ‘The Metallica Blacklist’, where he collaborated with Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ Chad Smith, WATT, Yo-Yo Ma, and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo.
