Michael Jackson Biopic Postponed to Late 2025

The release of the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, has been postponed to October 3, 2025, in the United States, with international dates yet to be announced. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Lionsgate, the film was originally scheduled for an April 2025 release. However, Deadline reports that Lionsgate decided to delay the film to align its release with the “awards corridor.”

Limited details about Michael have been disclosed so far. The first trailer was privately shown to critics at CinemaCon in April, where it reportedly received positive feedback, although it hasn’t been made available to the public.

In April, producer Graham King shared that the movie was halfway through production, adding that they were incredibly proud of this movie. He said that he was eager to present audiences with a film “like they’ve never seen before.” King also remarked that when you mention [Michael Jackson’s] name, everyone has an opinion. He expressed his hope that the film would bring together multiple generations of moviegoers, giving them “an inside look at the most prolific artist who ever lived.”

The biopic will star Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, in the lead role, and will cover the life and career of the legendary singer. Additional cast members include Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Miles Teller as manager John Branca, and The Vampire Diaries star Kat Graham as Diana Ross. Kendrick Sampson from Insecure will portray Quincy Jones, who passed away just days ago at the age of 91.

The only released still from the movie features Jaafar Jackson in one of Michael Jackson’s iconic outfits.

The news of the film’s delay follows Quincy Jones’s recent passing. Jones, a close collaborator and co-producer of Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking Thriller album, was widely honoured in tributes from music legends like Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, and Celine Dion.

In other music film updates, it was recently revealed that The Weeknd’s upcoming film, featuring Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan, will connect to his forthcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow.
