Miley Cyrus opened up about her body image issues on an Instagram Live which she hosted along with Demi levato. The duo , under self isolation spoke about their renewed friendship and more importantly discussed the impact of online harassment and their body image issues.
Cyrus said that she was hesitant to show skin on stage due to the infamous 2013 VMA performance. During the 2013 VMA performance Miley sported a nude bralette and shorts sticking her tongue out in a cheeky fierce way, little did she know of the tidal wave of online criticism that was about to be hurled at her. Many compared her to a turkey as they described her as a ‘Pasty white girl’.
“I was just so skinny and so pasty and they kept putting me next to this turkey, and I was feeling so bad on myself that I did not wear a bikini for like two years and no one thought that that would ever made me feel some type of way.”
Miley said that this was her turning point when she stopped wearing bikinis and shorts for two years. In her Instagram live , she said “I think what was so hard about it was my brand has always been about being so unapologetically myself and being confident, and the worse thing that I would feel like I would be to my fans is lying or a fraud.”
Recently Demi Levato also spoke out against her previous team who starved her for aesthetic reasons. In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres she said that she hadn’t eaten a birthday cake in 6 years, she revealed that she was served with a watermelon topped with cream instead of a birthday cake. Fans were shocked as she went to details about the lengths to which her team tried to keep her away from all kinds of food. Many women in the music industry have started to acknowledge the prevalence of eating disorders and the body shaming they face.
This heart warming Instagram Live comes in at the time of self isolation where many artists are practising and encouraging self isolation. Both Demi and Miley encouraged the practice of self isolation and handwashing to combat the spread of the Pandemic.
Miley also disclosed her regret for cancelling her Melbourn Bush relief concert meant for firefighters of Australia. She said “I will still be making a donation to help the victims of the Australian bush fire. I’m sorry to miss everyone in Australia, but I will be back soon,” . She clarified that her decision was made in accordance with the government and federal laws and that she didn’t want to put anyone in danger.
Well we hope you rock that Bikini girl because 2020 is all about the self love!
