Missy Elliot Clarifies All Our Doubts About ‘Oops (Oh My)’

Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliot, posted on Twitter yesterday, stating that the true meaning behind her song with singer Tweet was not what we all believed it to be. The song ‘Oops (Oh My) is Tweet’s debut single from her album Southern Hummingbird (2002), featuring the American rapper and ex-member of R&B girl-group ‘Sista’.

The ‘Get Your Freak On’ star told netizens that this song is actually about self-love, and accepting yourself, and not the narrative of, well, getting our freak on! But is it?

‘If It Ain’t Broke…’

Missy Elliot’s tweet was in reply to a fan’s statement who basically asked people to look for the sexual innuendoes in the song. Though it’s a big claim, the singer did take notice and clarified the meaning of the song.

Missy goes to say, “#Funfact this song was never bout Masturbation it was always about her appreciating her Dark Skin (Self Love)when she looked in the mirror it was the listeners that thought it was about sex & just ran with it… & we just let the consumers mind create what they wanted.”

A very effective strategy because as we all know, sex sells. Missy also released a statement about the song saying that she was happy to let anyone interpret it as being about whatever fueled their fantasies, even if it was just “a clever way to say ‘love yourself’”.

A Sneaky Path to Success.

The song still stands to be everyone’s favourite. When it dropped in 2002, it went on to reach the top of the Billboard charts. ‘Oops (Oh My) is produced by Timbaland and there’s no denying that it’s worth all the hype it’s received.

Self-love comes in all forms of acceptance, mentally and physically. Oops (Oh My) gives us a bold and brazen approach of feeling confident in our own skin, a euphemism set aside! Well done, Missy!
