‘Moana 2’ Post-Credits Scene: A Familiar Face Returns, Teasing ‘Moana 3’

Spoilers ahead for ‘Moana 2’.

What will happen to Maui and Moana next? An intriguing third instalment is hinted at in Moana 2’s post-credits scene.

In the follow-up, Moana and Maui work together to defeat the will of the storm god Nalo and save the cursed island of Motufetū from the depths of the ocean. By directing their boats, the island can assist the Polynesian people reunite. They come across Matangi, a mysterious character sent to keep people from getting to the island, along the way. After first acting as a barrier, Matangi eventually helps Moana go to Motufetū so she can attempt to liberate herself from Nalo.

As the story comes to a close, Moana, Maui, and their team—Loto, Moni, and Kele—restore Motufetū and start reestablishing contact between the islands. The post-credits scene, however, makes clear that Nalo is far from defeated. Matangi and Tamatoa, the enormous coconut crab from the first movie, join him as he swears to punish Moana and Maui for disobeying him. Still harbouring resentment for the two, Tamatoa promises to assist and even hints at a new song for his fellow villains.

Disney hasn’t made an official announcement about ‘Moana 3’, but it appears like Nalo will be trying to stop Moana from reuniting with her people. The possibility of future hostilities is further increased by Matangi and Tamatoa’s return to support Nalo.
