Modders Recreate Mario Kart World Tracks in Mario Kart Wii Ahead of Release

Although Mario Kart World won’t officially release for a few weeks, some dedicated modders have already begun to bring its tracks to life in Mario Kart Wii. The Mario Kart series has made its way onto nearly every major Nintendo console, and the upcoming Switch 2 will be no exception. The game was first teased alongside the Switch 2’s reveal in early 2025, with a full trailer presented during a Nintendo Direct focused on the new console. Mario Kart World is set to launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5.

During the April 2025 Nintendo Direct, a preview of Mario Kart World showed off a variety of vibrant new tracks. These include both revamped classics from previous Mario Kart titles and entirely fresh designs that take advantage of the game’s open-world format. From the sunny roads of Mario Bros. Circuit to the snowy slopes of Starview Peak, Mario Kart World is shaping up to be a visual feast that will highlight the capabilities of the Switch 2. But some modders aren’t waiting for the official release. They’ve already recreated several tracks from the upcoming game in the older Mario Kart Wii, originally released in 2008. A YouTube video by MarioPower55 showcased several of these impressive fan-made tracks, with each mod credited to the modder behind it. For example, Iggy Ze Koopa recreated Crown City, Airship Fortress, and the updated Wario Shipyard, while TheGamingBram tackled Mario Bros. Circuit, and Samantha MK remade DK Spaceport. While the Wii’s graphics aren’t as sharp as those in the upcoming game, these mods still faithfully capture the spirit of the Mario Kart World courses shown in recent trailers.

The Mario Kart series has always been a playground for modders, with numerous creative mods, especially for Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U. Fans have introduced features like dynamic time-of-day changes and even new playable characters such as Crash Bandicoot and Sonic, showcasing the endless possibilities for customizing the game.

Fans of the series won’t have to wait much longer to jump into Mario Kart World and its new tracks, though the game’s hefty price tag might be a hurdle for some. It will be available both as a standalone purchase and in a limited-edition bundle with the Nintendo Switch 2, but securing a pre-order may be the only way to get it before stock runs out.
