New 'Scary Movie' Sequel Confirmed: First Installment in Over a Decade Since 'Scary Movie 5'

The ‘Scary Movie’ label is returning after a ten-year break, led by original founders Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans. The Wayans brothers, who wrote and directed the first two ‘Scary Movie’  movies, are collaborating with Paramount and Miramax to bring the horror-comedy series back to life, according to Deadline. The franchise, which was first influenced by popular slasher movies from the 1990s like ‘Scream’ and ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, effectively mimicked these horror classics. Now that many of those movies are returning to theatres, it seems appropriate for ‘Scary Movie’  to do the same.

The franchise began in 2000 when protagonists Brenda Meeks (Regina Hall) and Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) amusingly faced a masked assailant who was threatening their high school.

Even so, the title says "No Mercy. No Shame. No Sequel," ‘Scary Movie 2’ was released in response to the success of the first ‘Scary Movie’, adding more supernatural horror classics, such as ‘The Haunting’ and ‘Stigmata’, to the series' satirical fare.

The series, which was led by David Zucker of Airplane!, imitated recent horror and sci-fi movies with ‘Scary Movie 3’ and ‘Scary Movie 4’, but without the Wayans' involvement. ‘Scary Movie 5’, which was released in 2013, was a further departure, starring Simon Rex and Ashley Tisdale in a parody of Paranormal Activity.

Despite receiving negative reviews, ‘Scary Movie’  managed to maintain its commercial success, earning close to $900 million worldwide. The Wayans brothers said they were thrilled to collaborate once more and restore comedy to theaters, where they think it belongs. Fans may look forward to a new episode of this venerable satire series when production on the remake begins next year.
