New ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Set Photos Hint at Major Plotline Reveal

The end is near for the mainline ‘Conjuring’ series, as filming for ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ has officially kicked off. Recently, new set photos of Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson surfaced, showing the duo back in action as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the famous paranormal investigators. Shared by producer Patrick Green on X (formerly Twitter), the images have sparked speculation about which of Warren’s real-life case files writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has chosen for the fourth film.

While the ‘Conjuring’ movies are fictionalized retellings, each is based on a real case the Warrens investigated. The first film focused on the Perron family’s haunted Rhode Island home in the 1970s, while ‘The Conjuring 2’ explored the infamous Enfield haunting in England. The latest entry, ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’, centred on the 1981 case of Arne Johnson, which involved possession and witchcraft.

Johnson-McGoldrick has plenty of cases to choose from for the fourth movie, but the new set images—featuring Farmiga and Wilson dressed for a funeral—offer some clues. One possibility is the Snedeker House case from 1986, previously the inspiration for ‘The Haunting in Connecticut’.

The house had once been a funeral home, adding to the eerie atmosphere, and was believed to be haunted by the spirits of those embalmed there. While the Warrens could be attending a funeral for various reasons in ‘Last Rites’, the setting and the timeline hint that this case might be the focus of the film.

Though ‘Last Rites’ seems to be the final ‘Conjuring’ film featuring Farmiga and Wilson, the universe itself isn’t ending. Warner Bros. has announced plans for a ‘Conjuring’ TV series, likely pulling from more of the Warrens’ case files. While no casting details have been revealed, new stars may take over the roles of Ed and Lorraine.

‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ is set to hit theatres on 5th September, 2025.
