Nick Mason has expressed his desire to use AI to create new Pink Floyd songs.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Mirror (via Music News), the drummer discussed the potential for an AI-assisted Pink Floyd reunion. David Gilmour had declared the band to be over in 2015, saying that the iconic prog-rock group had “run its course.”
Mason mentioned the intrigue of seeing what AI could achieve with new music and suggested the possibility of an AI scenario where David Gilmour and Roger Waters reconcile. He likened the idea to ABBA’s virtual performances.
Reflecting on the long-standing feud between Gilmour and Waters, Mason expressed disappointment that it had overshadowed the band. He highlighted the privilege of their 55-year career, which included touring the world and meeting interesting people.
Currently, Mason performs Pink Floyd’s earlier music as part of Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, alongside Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp and bassist Guy Pratt. He emphasized the importance of continuing to perform Pink Floyd songs, noting that it makes sense to keep the legacy alive and that he enjoys looking back on their music with fondness.
Gilmour has also considered the possibility of an ABBA-style Pink Floyd show, though he noted it would require “very difficult and onerous conditions.” He shared his experience watching ABBA’s ‘Voyage’ and felt that while the imagery was decent, it wasn’t entirely convincing. He did, however, appreciate the live band’s performance.
When asked about a potential Pink Floyd hologram show, Gilmour stated he would be open to it if the right conditions and ideas were presented.
