Nintendo Switch 2 Controllers Hide a Musical Easter Egg

Nintendo has revealed a fun hidden feature in the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2—its controllers can actually be used to play musical notes. When users connect up to four controller setups to the console, pressing the L and R buttons on each triggers distinct sounds that together form a musical scale. This playful Easter egg lets players recreate simple melodies directly through the system’s Controller Settings menu.

Ahead of the Switch 2’s June 5 launch, Nintendo has been teasing small surprises and features through short videos on its Nintendo Today mobile app. One earlier clip highlighted a battery-saving feature that caps charging at 90% to prolong battery life, though the system may still top off to 100% on occasion for accuracy. Now, another video—shared widely by content creator Stealth40k—demonstrates the musical capabilities of the Switch 2 controllers.

Making Music With Joy-Con 2 and the Pro Controller

The clip shows three pairs of Joy-Con 2 controllers assigned to player slots one through three, and a Switch 2 Pro Controller as player four. Each pair contributes to the musical scale:

  • Player one can play the notes Do and Re,
  • Player two gets Mi and Fa,
  • and additional notes follow with more controllers.

This interactive sound feature is activated in the Controller Settings menu, and the tones are triggered simply by pressing L and R.

Interestingly, it appears that original Switch controllers—like the first-gen Joy-Cons and Pro Controller—will also work with this feature on the new system. That means players won’t necessarily need the new hardware to join in on the fun.

Nintendo Switch 2 Controllers: A Creative Touch for Fans

While the Switch 2 boasts upgraded hardware and improved performance, Nintendo is continuing its tradition of quirky, creative extras that fans love. This musical Easter egg won’t change gameplay—but it adds a unique, lighthearted touch that invites players to explore, experiment, and even try to replicate classic Nintendo tunes straight from the controller menu.

What kind of songs fans will come up with using this feature remains to be seen—but it’s another reminder of how Nintendo blends charm and innovation in even the smallest details.
