‘Permission to Dance’ Didn’t Stress Him Out as ‘Butter’ Did, says BTS Star: RM

In an interview with the Weverse Magazine, BTS’ RM opened up about how making their latest hit Permission to Dance made him feel when compared to their previous hit Butter.

He also mentioned that there were discussions of adding some rap into their latest English single, but the group decided to cancel it. The song was co-written by Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid. “I have more fun when I’m singing and dancing than anything else,” RM said. “I think this song was one of the few times that I felt like I was just having fun while singing and dancing on it. It feels amazing to give in to the song with your whole body and just laugh instead of thinking about it too much. I think that’s the power of the song,” he added.

Talking about their latest hit that debuted on 24th July, he says working on it was different when compared to their previous hit Butter, which was written by Rob Grimaldi, Stephen Kirk, Ron Perry, Jenna Andrews, RM, Alex Bilowitz, and Sebastian Gracia. “I wasn’t stressed preparing for it like I was with ‘Butter,’” he says. “When it came to ‘Butter,’ I had to think about what we should show off and how I could do that. …But I really didn’t have to worry about that with ‘Permission to Dance.’ Honestly, I felt like I only needed to add just a dash of the enjoyment I felt,” he added.

Reports from Showbiz CheatSheet say that RM attempted to write rap verses for himself, Suga, and J-Hope. “With the verses, RM helped write, ‘Butter’ sounds more like a standard BTS song, as many of their songs lean on the rap line.”

RM told Weverse Magazine, “Even though the song’s in English, I thought we should make it feel like our own, so we kept the original but put a little of our own flavor in at the end.”

“It’d feel like something’s missing if it weren’t there, right? I felt like we absolutely had to have it in there. There’s something different about us from American pop stars. Our DNA is different.” The singer added.

When asked about this solo, Bicycle, which made its debut in June, the RM revealed that being a musician has been challenging for him at times. “I’ve faced a lot of pressure while making music throughout my life to move ahead a little more or make music that stands out better,” he said. The singer also said that he decided to write a song about bicycles because they “hold an important place in my heart.”

“When I ride my bike, I’m free from the pressure of the things I’m supposed to feel and think about. I don’t care if people recognize me, and that’s the closest I get to feeling free, mentally and physically — when I’m riding fast and feeling like I’m up on a cloud.” Says the 26-year-old singer.
