Pink Floyd Sells Music Catalog, Name And Likeness to Sony For $400 Million

Pink Floyd has made headlines with the sale of their music catalogue, name, and likeness to Sony in a deal reportedly valued at around $400 million. The iconic English progressive rock band, known for legendary tracks like ‘Money’ and ‘Another Brick in the Wall’, is now part of one of the most lucrative transactions in the music industry.

According to reports, the agreement grants Sony ownership of Pink Floyd's likeness, meaning they will profit from merchandise sales, potential film adaptations, and other media ventures associated with the band.

While this historic deal is a milestone, it comes with specific stipulations. Notably, the band’s songwriting rights were not included in the sale, limiting Sony’s ownership to the recorded rights only.

This deal follows years of negotiations, with Pink Floyd previously exploring offers from companies like Warner Music, BMG, and Hipgnosis. Before the finalisation of this Sony deal, Pink Floyd spent around two years seeking the right buyer for their catalogue.

The sale continues a trend in the music industry, with other major artists also capitalising on their music rights. For example, Justin Bieber sold his 291-song catalogue to Hipgnosis Songs Capital for $200 million, while Katy Perry sold the rights to her works from 2008 to 2020 for $225 million.

Pink Floyd’s contribution to the music world is monumental, with their 1973 album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ making Billboard history. With the band’s rich legacy and extensive catalogue, Sony’s acquisition further solidifies Pink Floyd’s enduring impact on both music and popular culture. The deal is set to open new avenues for the band’s presence in media and merchandise, ensuring their influence resonates for generations to come.
