‘Popeye the Slayer Man’: Upcoming Horror Movie Release Update

One of the most recognizable characters in popular culture is ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’, who was first drawn by E.C. Segar in the Thimble Theater comic strip in 1929. Popeye, who has superhuman strength due to his love of spinach, has been adapted numerous times throughout the years, including the 1980 live-action movie. In the upcoming horror film ‘Popeye the Slayer Man’, which is scheduled for release in 2025, the beloved seafaring sailor will now experience a sinister and surprising turn.

‘Popeye the Slayer Man’ will reimagine the sailor with a sinister past, according to Deadline. In order to record the legend of the “Sailor Man,” a ghostly creature rumoured to haunt the factory and surrounding docks, a group of pals break into an abandoned spinach canning facility. Naturally, things take a terrible turn. The film promises a new take on the well-known figure and is co-produced by Salem House Films, Millman Productions, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media.

Jason Stephens plays Popeye, and the cast includes Steven McCormack (‘The Out-Laws’), Sarah Nicklin (‘Black Mass’), Angela Relucio (‘Code Black’) Sean Michael Conway, Mabel Thomas, Elena Juliano,  Marie-Louise Boisnier, and Jeff Thomas. The film was written by Ryan and John Doolan and directed by Robert Michael Ryan.

The goal of producers Cuyle Carvin (‘Ouija Witch’), Alexander Tucker, Alysa Blasetti, Nathan Todaro,  and Jeff Miller (The Toybox) is to create a horror film that is driven by practical effects. Miller was excited about the project, emphasizing how eager fans are to see this powerful and dangerous version of Popeye. For the gore, physical effects rather than computer-generated imagery are used.

Remarkably, there are other horror versions of the Sailor in development besides ‘Popeye the Slayer Man’. In addition, ITN Studios is developing Popeye, a horror-comedy that recasts the iconic spinach eater as a vicious serial murderer. This version stars Steven Murphy as Popeye. According to the story, the ruthless sailor terrorizes a group of counsellors who are attempting to start a summer camp.

‘Popeye the Slayer Man’ is scheduled to debut in 2025, while an exact release date has not yet been announced. The once-loved sailor will be shown in a violent new light for fans of horror and twisted reimaginings.
