Robert Eggers’ Upcoming Film Explores Werewolf Horror in Medieval England

Robert Eggers has formally revealed ‘Werwulf’, a werewolf horror movie set in England in the thirteenth century. Eggers co-wrote and will direct the film, which continues his investigation of mythical animals in historical contexts and comes after his vampire adaptation Nosferatu.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that ‘Werwulf’ will have medieval-style conversations with translations and commentary for contemporary viewers. It was originally intended to be a black-and-white movie, like Eggers’ 2019 endeavour ‘The Lighthouse’, but it will now be shown in colour. The movie adheres to Eggers’ distinctive aesthetic, which combines mythology with painstaking historical reality in pieces like ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Northman’.

For this project, Eggers and Sjón, co-writer of ‘The Northman’, are collaborating once more. On Christmas Day, 2026, ‘Werwulf’ is scheduled to be released in the United States.

Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, and Bill Skarsgård starred in Eggers’ most recent film, Nosferatu, which was a reimagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 vampire classic. Although Eggers’ frequent collaborator Jarin Blaschke’s cinematography was hailed for its arresting visuals, some commentators questioned the necessity of another faithful retelling of the classic vampire tale. NME gave the movie three stars, praising its gothic aesthetic while speculating that its target audience would be mostly other goths.

During filming, Nosferatu also used an incredible 5,000 live rats, as Nicholas Hoult revealed in interviews. Eggers joked that the renowned vampire figure Count Orlok was first introduced to younger audiences by ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’. In the meantime, there have been whispers that Eggers would be directing a follow-up to the 1986 cult favourite ‘Labyrinth’.
