Ryan Reynolds Opens Up About Struggles of Being Away From His Kids

Ryan Reynolds has expressed his feelings about the potential for a fourth ‘Deadpool’ film, acknowledging that although he loved playing a part in the series, the time commitment required makes him wary of doing so. Reynolds noted that the Deadpool persona feeds on scarcity and surprise, which is one reason why the second and third films were so far apart in an interview with Andrew Garfield for Variety’s Actors on Actors series.

Reynolds considered how his entire life is consumed by the hard nature of filming a ‘Deadpool’ movie, from creation to post-production and marketing. In particular, as a father to daughters James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4, and his son Olin, born in February 2023, he recognised the difficulty of striking a balance between his professional and personal lives. His statement, “I don’t ever want to be an absentee, and I don’t ever want to miss stuff,” reflected the emotional toll that missing significant events in his children’s lives takes.

The actor acknowledged that missing his kids’ sporting games or other activities causes him great distress. He said that seeing their expressions and realizing that he missed their competitiveness or significant moments is like a painful experience.

Reynolds also discussed his bond with Taylor Swift, who made it known that she is his children’s godmother. The singer humorously called him “my godkids’ sperm donor” in a ‘Deadpool 3’ post. Reynolds acknowledged the impact Swift’s endorsement could have on the movie’s success and quipped that he wanted that line on his gravestone.
