Scarlett Johansson Questions Oscars Snub of 'Avengers: Endgame'

Scarlett Johansson has expressed her displeasure with ‘Avengers: Endgame's lack of significant Oscar nominations, contending that a movie's financial success shouldn't take away from its potential for critical praise.  The 2019 movie only garnered a nomination for Best Visual Effects and was excluded from important categories like Best Picture and acting awards, despite being a box office titan and the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga.

Scarlett Johansson, who has been nominated for two Academy Awards, was a major player in ‘Endgame’, which made $2.7 billion worldwide and is still the second-highest-grossing movie ever, after ‘Avatar’.  According to her, the movie was an almost unachievable success that went beyond all expectations and connected with a huge worldwide audience, which is why its Oscar rejection was so shocking.

Scarlett Johansson suggested that the Academy's persistent bias for arthouse film may be out of date, citing ‘Endgame’ as a unique example of a big-budget blockbuster that also functions as an engaging story.  While previous blockbusters like ‘Titanic’ received the highest accolades, other films like ‘Jaws’, ‘Star Wars’, and ‘Jurassic Park’ were also disregarded in important categories, even though they were eventually hailed as classics.

While promoting her forthcoming picture, ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’, which is scheduled for release on 2nd July, Scarlett Johansson talked about the artistic depth that may be achieved in action movies in the same interview.  Citing ‘Terminator 2's inventive storyline and fusion of nostalgia and fresh concepts as an example of astute genre filmmaking, Scarlett Johansson hailed it as one of the best movies ever made.

Scarlett Johansson also discussed the importance of upholding personal boundaries in public life and gave an explanation for why she refrains from posing for informal pictures with fans outside of press conferences.  Her posture conveys a wish to maintain her sense of reality and avoid being unduly shaped by transient interactions.

Her remarks rekindle the debate about the Oscars' ties to blockbuster movies and whether or not prizes should be given more weight for artistic significance and commercial appeal.
