Sean Penn has finally spoken up about Madonna's long-standing claim that he was her true love after decades of silence.
The couple costarred in the 1986 movie ‘Shanghai Surprise’ and were wed from 1985 to 1989. They stayed close friends even after they parted ways. Fans are reminded of Madonna's 1991 documentary ‘Madonna: Truth or Dare,’ in which she described Sean Penn as the love of her life.
Sean Penn responded to the comment more than 30 years laterrecently when he appeared on ‘The Louis Theroux’ Podcast. Sean Penn acknowledged the event with a knowing reference to the past when asked if he remembered Madonna's sincere sentiments. She is a longtime friend, he said, and her reply was "very sweet." He did, however, also consider their brief marriage, stating that they soon came to the conclusion that what seemed to be enduring love was more akin to an amazing first date and not a sign that they should be lifelong partners.

Sean Penn joked that "it's not all jail" and said that he had happy memories of that period of his life and that their friendship was swiftly restored following the divorce.
Shawn Levy, the director of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, is leading the early production of a new limited series that will explore Madonna's life on a streaming platform. Paul Thomas Anderson's ambitious film, which is already creating a lot of talk, will star Sean Penn alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio Del Toro in a sprawling thriller.
