Selena Gomez And Cast Reveal Why ‘Only Murders in The Building’ Season 4 is The Darkest Yet

The highly anticipated Season 4 of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ has premiered, starring Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin. The new season is already receiving praise, with the cast describing it as the darkest one yet. Steve Martin, who portrays Charles, revealed, “One of my best friends in ‘Only Murders’ gets killed, which does make it dark.” 

This season, Charles faces the traumatic loss of a close friend and the looming threat of a killer still at large, adding significant tension to his character’s journey. Reflecting on his role, Martin discussed the challenge of balancing dark themes with the show’s humour.

He noted, “I’ve been acting my whole life, running into situations like that in films where you have to dig a little deeper. It’s just pitching your performance in the right way.” Martin also drew parallels to his past work, recalling how he managed emotional scenes in a 1991 rom-com, where he would shift from serious moments to comedic ones, saying, “It’s a balance you learn through experience.”

Season 4 reunites the iconic trio—Charles, Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short)—as they embark on another murder investigation. This time, the death of Sazz Pataki, Charles’s stunt double, hits close to home, making the crime deeply personal. Unlike previous seasons set in New York, the investigation takes them to California, introducing new challenges as they navigate unfamiliar territory.

In addition to solving the murder, the trio is also caught up in the making of a big-budget movie based on their lives. This subplot adds a fresh layer to the series, as they juggle the demands of Hollywood with their pursuit of justice.
