Selena Gomez Expresses Gratitude for 'Emilia Pérez' Premiere

Selena Gomez is feeling incredibly thankful for her recent career milestones. Speaking to PEOPLE at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her new film ‘Emilia Pérez’ on 9th September, the 32-year-old singer and actress expressed her gratitude for all the exciting developments in her professional life. "It’s such a wonderful gift," she said, acknowledging how "overwhelming" it all feels.

In addition to ‘Emilia Pérez’, Gomez stars in the hit show ‘Only Murders in the Building’, for which she’s nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the upcoming Primetime Emmys on September. Moreover, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, her business ventures, particularly her Rare Beauty brand, have elevated her to billionaire status.

‘Emilia Pérez’, directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, tells the story of a Mexican drug lord, played by actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who fakes his death, undergoes gender reassignment surgery, and becomes Emilia Pérez, leaving his wife (played by Gomez) and children behind. The film, a musical featuring original songs, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it received critical acclaim, including the Jury Prize and Best Actress award for its female ensemble cast.

Gascón made history by becoming the first openly trans person to win Best Actress at Cannes. Following the Toronto premiere, Gomez revealed that  ‘Emilia Pérez’ was her first time acting in Spanish, admitting she was nervous but grateful they successfully pulled it off.
