Selena Gomez Feels That She’s a Bit Too Old for the Pop Star Life
Selena Gomez has reiterated her decision to focus more on her acting career than returning to music. During an interview last month to promote her new film Emilia Perez, she mentioned how enjoyable it has been to focus on acting. In a more recent conversation with actress Saoirse Ronan for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Gomez further emphasized that she feels she might be “a little too old for the pop star life.”
Ronan complimented Gomez on her ability to balance both acting and music, noting how different her acting roles are compared to other musicians who transition to acting. Gomez responded with gratitude, acknowledging how much the compliment meant to her. She shared that she views her music career as separate from her acting, but expressed that she doesn’t see music as something she’ll pursue forever.
She also briefly mentioned her partner, producer Benny Blanco, explaining that while her focus may be on acting, music will always be a part of her life, especially since Blanco is a musician. She added that she enjoys music in a fun, personal way but finds it more vulnerable to share her music with the world, as opposed to escaping into a character.
Gomez then reiterated her belief that while music will always be part of her life, she is currently more drawn to acting. She acknowledged that acting might be her strongest suit, but she also takes pride in her music, particularly in telling transparent and honest stories through ballads. However, she admitted that she might be “a little too old for the pop-star life” and is happy to be embracing a new phase of her life, which she feels is just the beginning.

Her last album, Rare, was released in 2020. Although Gomez initially rose to fame through acting on the Disney Channel before transitioning to music, she has recently developed a renewed passion for acting. She has received widespread praise for her role in Only Murders In The Building, earning her first acting Emmy nomination earlier this year.
In addition to her acting work, she stars in Emilia Perez alongside Zoe Saldaña. The film has received mixed reviews, with one critic noting the unique nature of the movie and the solid performances, though the review also stated that some viewers might not want to revisit it.
