Selena Gomez Reflects on Past Relationships: Admits to Being ‘Reactive’ and Making Mistakes

Selena Gomez has been considering how she has changed as a result of her previous relationships.

She talked candidly about her past relationship conflict resolution techniques in a recent interview with her fiancé, Benny Blanco, on the ‘On Purpose with Jay Shetty’ podcast.  Their collaborative album, ‘I Said I Love You First’, which provides fans with a more in-depth look at their love journey, was released soon after the conversation.

Gomez acknowledged that she used to frequently react emotionally in relationships, which is why she decided to work on herself for five years.  She revealed that she didn’t think Blanco deserved to deal with her hardships and that she wouldn’t have been in the proper frame of mind for a meaningful relationship if they had met ten years earlier.

She wanted to make sure that her connection with Blanco was different, and she also admitted that she had made mistakes in the past.  She claimed that his empathy and patience had enabled her to change her perspective and speak in a more constructive manner.

The pair has been transparent about their relationship since they started dating in 2023 and became engaged in December 2024.  Their journey together, from before they met to falling in love and looking to the future, is chronicled in their album ‘I Said I Love You First’, which was organically born out of their shared experiences.
