Selena Gomez Shares Emotional Struggle of Not Being Able to Carry Children

Selena Gomez recently opened up about her plans for future motherhood in an interview with Vanity Fair about their October issue. The 32-year-old singer and actress revealed that, due to medical issues, she is unable to carry her own children. "I’ve never said this publicly... but unfortunately, I can’t carry my own children," she shared, explaining that her health conditions would put both her life and the baby's at risk. "It was something I had to grieve for a while," Gomez admitted.

Gomez, who was diagnosed with lupus in 2015 and later with bipolar disorder in 2020, has spoken openly about her health challenges in the past. Despite this, she remains hopeful about becoming a mother, expressing gratitude for alternatives like surrogacy or adoption. "I find it a blessing that there are wonderful options like surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” she said. "I’m excited for what that journey will look like, even if it’s a little different. It will still be my baby."

This isn't the first time Gomez has addressed her desire to have children. In a 2022 interview, she tearfully reflected on how her bipolar medications might prevent her from carrying a child, a reality that has weighed heavily on her. Despite the challenges, Gomez remains optimistic, saying, "However I'm meant to have them, I will."

Bipolar disorder medications are known to carry risks during pregnancy, including birth defects and developmental issues, but many doctors recommend continuing treatment due to the potential for worsening symptoms during pregnancy.

In addition to her reflections on motherhood, Gomez also spoke about her relationship with her boyfriend, Benny Blanco, confirming their romance in December 2023. She described him as a "complete light" in her life and her best friend. Gomez also shared how cooking with Blanco has brought her a sense of peace, emphasizing the joy she finds in simple, everyday activities like picking fresh food from the garden.
