Selena Gomez Waves Goodbye to the ‘Rare’ Era

With the release of her third full-length studio album, “Rare”, Selena Gomez has entirely reinvented herself. The album showed the world a new side to the former Disney star, both in terms of theme and soundscape. “Rare” also proved to be Selena’s career defining project as it earned the star her very first No. 1 claim on the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Lose You To Love Me’. But all these victories only arrived after months of gruelling work and a lot of self-reflection.

Selena recently sat down for an interview, to give fans an insight into the process it took to create the emotionally intense,  ‘Lose You To Love Me’. The young star worked alongside her close friends and long-time collaborators, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter to craft the lyrics of this track. While the Grammy-winning duo, Mattman & Robin, helped her out with the production on this song.

Selena Gomez & The Vulnerability Seen on ‘Rare’

But once again, diving into the concept that bound this track together, Selena explained,  “This song alone represents what a lot of people who are heartbroken have gone through. One of the hardest parts for me to sing in the song was the bridge. It’s the ending of the song, and that’s the part where it’s like, ‘You know, I guess this is goodbye forever for us.’ And that killed me.”

It’s no secret that the song speaks of Selena’s tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber and much like the title suggests, this tune proves to be one of the most vulnerable numbers sitting on her album.

Interestingly, it was in fact Michaels who suggested that Selena turn this piece into a ballad. Further, Justin Tranter went on to breakdown Selena’s process, praising her ability to craft something genuine, raw and authentic.  “One of her superpowers is being so honest, and she’s going to give you her life in the lyric, but then when she gets on the mic, she does the same thing. She tells you the story, she brings you through her truth, and that is what makes great art,” Tranter shared.

Further, Selena articulated that she was ready to close this chapter of her life. “I wanted people to take away that this was a journey and that it was completely closed. I don’t want people to see me as just sad and hurt. I didn’t want that anymore. I wanted people to know that I experienced something real, and that part of me is over.”

Whether Selena is ready to embark on a new musical journey is something we’ll just have to wait and see.
