A long-awaited biopic about Janis Joplin is moving forward, with Shailene Woodley set to star as the legendary rock icon.
Woodley, who will also serve as a producer alongside Tower Hill Entertainment, has secured $2.49 million in funding from the California Film Commission, as announced on 10th September.
Woodley said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter that California played a crucial role in Janis Joplin’s life, from the streets of San Francisco to the recording studios of Sunset Sound. The state was where she immersed herself in both music and her vibrant personality.

She said she could imagine Janis would be thrilled to see her story bringing opportunities and funding to a place that was so significant to her, especially as she drove along the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche.
Woodley continued saying that they are deeply grateful to the California Film Commission’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program for supporting their vision. They believe California is the ideal location to authentically capture Janis’ life and are excited to move forward with this project.
Janis Joplin, who passed away in 1970 at the age of 27, has been the subject of numerous failed biopic attempts over the years. Past contenders for the role include Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink, and Melissa Etheridge. In January 2023, Margot Robbie also expressed interest in playing Joplin, noting the long-standing effort to bring her story to the screen.
