Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Won’t ‘Cross a Line’ in Songwriting About Their Private Love Story

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello have shown great respect for each other while navigating their breakup, especially when it comes to writing songs about their relationship. Recently, Mendes appeared on Jay Shetty’s ‘On Purpose’ podcast and shared how he’s handled the split with Cabello, 27, despite being under the public eye.

“Camila and I have done a great job preserving our private little fire of love for each other,” the 26-year-old singer said. He explained that no matter how strong someone is mentally, it’s tough not to be influenced by public opinion, adding that comments from millions can affect how people feel about their relationships.

After announcing their breakup in November 2021, the former couple sparked brief reconciliation rumors in 2023, but Mendes has since distanced himself from social media, saying it’s harmful to his relationships. “I don’t care what people say about my love life—it’s too damaging to the relationship itself,” he explained.

When asked by Shetty how they’ve managed to protect their relationship, Mendes emphasized the importance of “immense honesty” and “over-communication.” They make sure to clarify any misunderstandings that arise from public comments or interviews, which helps prevent assumptions from growing.

Both artists are careful not to overstep boundaries, with Mendes noting that they would never “cross a line” in their songwriting, as they have a deep mutual respect. He credited Cabello for her understanding and caring nature, making communication between them easy.

Mendes and Cabello, who dated for over two years, confirmed their split in November 2021, vowing to remain best friends. In April 2023, they briefly rekindled their romance but decided it wasn’t meant to be by June. Cabello later reflected that they both realised they didn’t need to force the relationship to work, but she still cares deeply for Mendes.
