Sky Ferreira Releases First Song in Over Two Years, ‘Leash,’ for A24’s Babygirl
Sky Ferreira has released her first new song in over two years, ‘Leash,’ created for the upcoming A24 film Babygirl. The track became available on streaming platforms today (December 6), following her 2022 comeback single, ‘Don’t Forget’. Fans, including Charli XCX, have eagerly awaited new music from Ferreira, who has previously opened up about her struggles with her former label, Capitol Records.
The synth-driven dream pop track, ‘Leash,’ is infused with a sense of vengeance, with Ferreira reflecting on the pain and cynicism of moving on from love. The song was co-written with Jorge Elbrecht, who also collaborated on ‘Don’t Forget.’ Listen to ‘Leash’ below.
Sky Ferreira shared her excitement with Rolling Stone about contributing ‘Leash’ to the upcoming A24 film Babygirl, explaining that she had long wanted to work on a project like this, particularly since many of her musical peers had collaborated with A24. She revealed that the song’s development shifted after she rewatched the film, moving from a poppier concept to something that better reflected the film’s underlying tone rather than its surface narrative. Ferreira admitted she initially doubted whether her less overtly pop-oriented track would be accepted, but it ultimately resonated with the film’s essence.
Earlier in the week, Ferreira spoke to Vogue about her ongoing efforts to retrieve her music from her former label, Capitol Records. She accused the label of intentionally delaying the process, framing it as an attempt to paint her as irresponsible. Ferreira emphasized that despite funding her own studio sessions, she is still working to regain rights to some of her material, though she acknowledged that reclaiming everything might not be possible.

Additionally, Ferreira updated Rolling Stone on her long-anticipated second album, Masochism, which she expects to release in 2025. Currently operating without a manager, she is undecided about whether to self-release the album or sign with a new label. She likened her decision to avoiding the rush of entering a new relationship immediately after leaving a bad one, noting the wisdom in taking her time after her challenging experiences with Capitol Records.
Fans have celebrated Ferreira’s return to music, previously advocating for her release from Capitol through public demonstrations, including a Times Square billboard and an aerial banner flown above the label’s Los Angeles headquarters. In a 2022 interview, Ferreira described the difficulties she faced with Capitol, likening the situation to a game of “whack-a-mole” where she felt repeatedly blocked just as she was close to escaping the cycle.
Beyond her music, Ferreira reflected on her connection with filmmaker David Lynch during her work on Twin Peaks: The Return.
The film Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, is set for release in the U.S. on Christmas Day, with a UK release scheduled for January 10, 2025.
