‘Sweet Bobby: The Catfish Nightmare’ – What Happened to Simran Bhogal?

OTT’s compelling documentary ‘Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare’ unravels a chilling tale of deception that spanned nearly a decade. The film centres on Kirat Assi, a former radio presenter who became ensnared in a complex online scheme orchestrated by someone posing as Bobby Jandu.

The shocking twist reveals that the true identity of her catfisher was her own cousin, Simran Bhogal. Assi’s online relationship with the fictitious Bobby began on Facebook in 2010. Posing as a successful cardiologist and an active member of their Sikh community in London, Bobby quickly captured Assi’s affections.

Despite their digital connection, the pair never met in person, as Bobby consistently provided elaborate excuses, from a life-threatening illness to being in witness protection, to justify their lack of meetings. These deceitful claims bred doubt, yet Assi remained steadfastly committed to the relationship.

The elaborate ruse began to unravel when Assi sought help from a private investigator after three fruitless years of attempts to meet Bobby. Confronting the real Bobby Jandu revealed that he was completely unaware of the catfishing scam. The truth finally came to light when Bhogal confessed to fabricating over 60 fake online personas, including Bobby and his supposed acquaintances, solely to manipulate Assi.

Despite Assi’s efforts to report the case to the police, Bhogal faced no criminal charges, as catfishing is not considered a criminal offence in the UK. Undeterred, Assi took her cousin to civil court for harassment and misuse of private information.

This legal battle ultimately resulted in Bhogal paying damages and issuing a private apology, highlighting the emotional and psychological toll of such manipulative actions. ‘Sweet Bobby’ serves as a poignant reminder of the darker side of online relationships and the vulnerabilities they can exploit.
