Taylor Swift Aspires to Direct Movies That Share Human Stories And Emotions

Taylor Swift stated in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) that she wants to make movies that are “about human stories, about human emotion”.

The pop singer was a part of an In Conversation panel at the festival and screened her debut short film, ‘All Too Well’, on 35mm.

“If it were the right thing, it would be such a privilege and honour,” Swift remarked when asked if she planned to direct feature-length movies in the future. “I will always want to tell human stories, about human emotion.”

Swift continued by mentioning female directors like Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Chloé Zhao (The Eternals) and Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally) as influences.

“It’s really beautiful that we’re in a place where the idea of a female filmmaker doesn’t make you roll your eyes or think as sceptically as it once was,” she said.

Swift also discussed the origins of her desire to become a director. She said she didn’t just wake up one day and say, “You know what, I want to direct.” She stated that she didn’t go to film school. Swift has been on the sets of about 60 music videos, and hence gained a lot of knowledge from the experience.

The musician went on to say that she truly began to learn everything because she had to, while working alone on the music video for her song ‘The Man’.

Swift was asked about the infamous scarf from the lyrics of the song ‘All Too Well’ at another time in the In Conversation session.

“I walked through the door with you / The air was cold / But something ‘bout it felt like home somehow / And I left my scarf there at your sister’s house,” Swift sings in the song’s first verse.

The star revealed at TIFF that although the scarf has evolved into a sort of cultural artifact, it “is a metaphor” in the song. She made it red, since the colour red has a significant role in the album which is titled, ‘Red.’
