THE GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS ARE OUT!

The nominees for the 77th Golden Globe Awards are in and yet again, it came with its own share of snubs and surprises. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual ceremony honors achievement in film and television and are viewed as the unpredictable unofficial kickoff to award season.

Owing to a strong showing from the films Marriage Story and The Irishman, being nominated for six and five awards respectively, Netflix dominated in total nominations this time around. In the television categories, the Netflix series The Crown and Unbelievable got four nominations each, as did HBO’s Chernobyl. Greta Gerwig, Robert De Niro and Cats were notably absent from this year’s movies nominations. Watchmen and Game of Thrones were among some of TV’s biggest snubs and surprises.

Up for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture are Taylor Swift’s “Beautiful Ghosts” from Cats, Beyoncé’s “Spirit” from The Lion King, and Elton John’s “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman. They will compete against Cynthia Erivo’s “Stand Up” (from Harriet) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’s “Into the Unknown” (from Frozen 2).

Once again, no women were nominated in the best director category, creating a row about the infamous industry-wide crisis that exists quite obviously. Historically, only five women have ever been nominated for best director Golden Globe.

This year marks the 77th anniversary of the Golden Globe Awards. The event telecast will air on January 5, 2020. Ricky Gervais is set to return as host for a fifth time. Can’t wait to get the awards season rolling!
