‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Set for 2027 Theatrical Release

The new fantasy movie ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, which expands the Tolkien universe, has an official release date set by Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie, which was directed by Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in Peter Jackson’s renowned trilogy, will be released in theatres on 17th December, 2027. This date may cause Disney to change its original plans for an unnamed ‘Star Wars’ project.
‘The Hunt for Gollum’, which was first revealed in 2023, is a significant return to Middle-earth, with Serkis serving as both the adventure’s director and the twisted hobbit’s voice. The ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ story will delve into unseen aspects of Gollum’s life, including his pursuit by Sauron, Gandalf, and Aragorn, is anticipated to take place between ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’.
Franchise veterans Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who contributed to the first trilogy, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou wrote the screenplay. Walsh and Boyens, who will once again collaborate with Peter Jackson, will also act as producers.

The release date for ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is purposefully reminiscent of the December release windows that contributed to the dominance of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy (2001–2003) and ‘The Hobbit’ movies (2012–2014) at the worldwide box office. All six of those films have made close to $6 billion globally. ‘The War of the Rohirrim’, a recent anime prequel that came out in December, performed less well, earning just over £20 million worldwide.
Expect an engrossing voyage into the complicated past of Gollum, providing a wealth of lore for devoted Tolkien fans and an approachable entry point for new readers. Another live-action Middle-earth movie is also being developed by Warner Bros., though specifics are still being kept under wraps.

If the plot and the time are perfect, actors Sir Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen have both indicated that they would like to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Aragorn. In the meanwhile, after a successful second run in late 2024, ‘The Rings of Power’ series is returning with a third season.
‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is positioned to be one of the most anticipated fantasy films of 2027 because to its all-star creative team, beloved anti-hero, and original plot.
