The Notorious B.I.G. vs. Tupac Shakur: The East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry of the 1990s remains one of the most iconic and tragic feuds in music history. On one side, you had The Notorious B.I.G., representing the East Coast, and on the other, Tupac Shakur, the West Coast’s shining star. What began as a friendly competition spiralled into something much darker, with diss tracks and insults exchanged.
Tupac continued to aim at his former friend in interviews and on tracks like ‘Against All Odds’ and ‘Bomb First (My Second Reply),’ but Biggie didn’t release an official response on record. He seemed genuinely hurt in a 1996 interview with Vibe: “This s**t’s just got to be talk, that’s all I kept saying to myself. I can’t believe he would think that I would s**t on him like that.”

Taylor Swift and Kanye West: This feud might have started as a simple award show interruption, but it quickly snowballed into a pop culture phenomenon. When Kanye West famously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, it sparked a feud that played out over social media, in songs, and in interviews for almost a decade. It was so popular that even the President of the United States, Barack Obama, commented on the controversy, calling West a “j*****s.”

Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez: This feud started with a simple interview question and spiralled into a longstanding pop diva rivalry. Mariah Carey, known for her incredible vocal range, was asked about Jennifer Lopez, to which she famously replied, “I don’t know her.” This quip became legendary and fuelled rumours of a feud. However, in recent years, both artists have downplayed the rivalry, and Mariah even stated that her comment was taken out of context.

Zayn Malik and One Direction: Malik’s departure from One Direction in March 2015 broke millions of hearts, with him citing a desire for a more “normal” life. However, eyebrows were raised when he was spotted in a recording studio with producer Naughty Boy shortly after. This led to a Twitter spat between Louis Tomlinson and Naughty Boy, with Tomlinson criticizing Naughty Boy’s actions. The tension escalated in May when Naughty Boy posted a photo with Malik, suggesting they replace someone, which Tomlinson interpreted as a dig at rumours of One Direction replacing Malik.
This exchange ended with Tomlinson questioning Naughty Boy’s career. Malik later responded, noting Tomlinson’s comments about his life. The feud saddened fans and signalled Malik’s unlikely return to the band. Despite their falling out, a tragedy ultimately led to a reconciliation when Malik offered condolences and support to Tomlinson after his mother’s passing, bringing them back together as friends.
